Juan Urgell is a Venezuelan-Mexican filmmaker with over 5 years of experience as scriptwriter, director, producer and editor of film projects. He discovered his filmmaking passion after finishing his Economics degree at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Since 2014 he specializes in the creative design of media projects, from concept to execution and final distribution, with a particular focus on developing inspiring character-driven stories about social issues in Latin America.
He has collaborated with a wide range of social enterprises, startups, nonprofits and international organizations, directing and producing corporate videos, documentaries, short films, branded and educational content and music videos, for clients such as Citibanamex, Chivas Regal, Blinkist, Institute for War and Peace Reporting, Save The Children and United Nations. Between 2018-2019 he was creative producer at On the Road Media, a video production company that tells cinematic stories to drive social change. He is part of the alumni of the Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI) at University of Santa Clara, California, and since 2018 he is a member of the Global Shapers community of the World Economic Forum.
His first documentary short “Lok’tavanej, Image Hunter” (2017), was premiered at the Mexico City Documentary Film Festival DocsMX, and screened at the Miami Independent Film Festival in 2017. He has participated in film co-production markets and workshops, including the International Documentary Festival DocMontevideo 2018 (Uruguay), the Guadalajara International Film Festival’s Industry market 2019 and DocsMX development workshop 2018 (Mexico), and has taken courses on documentary filmmaking at the Sundance Institute and the American Film Showcase (USA). He was awarded a grant from the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) for the development of his first feature documentary “Ak’majel” (Fighter). He’s currently distributing his new documentary short “A Poet in the Dark” (2020) in film festivals around the world, and developing two fiction short films to be shot in Mexico in 2021.
