Filmmaker. Film and TV Director, Writer and Producer. For 40 years he has been one of the main players in the Venezuelan film industry. He has worked on almost all audiovisual functions: screenwriter, producer, editor, and director of films, documentaries, miniseries, TV shows, and commercials spots.
Urgelles has directed six feature films: (Alias) The King of Joropo (1978, with Carlos Rebolledo), The Wedding (1982), The Attempt (1984), The Halley Generation (1986), The Devil’s Plates (1993) and The Birds go away with Death (2013). Several of these movies obtained resounding box-office success, and others have merited important awards. In 1991 The Wedding was included by notable Hispano-American critics in the top 25 list of most important movies of the Latin-American film industry.
He co-wrote the scripts for all of his films and, in addition, “A lucky day”, “The glory of Mamporal”, “My Kingdom for a camera” and “The Commander’s dam”. Her most recent screenplay: “Malika”, co-written with Carlos Mesber, has received 9 international awards and is currently under Development in the United States and France.
As executive producer, Urgelles has been responsible for Taken House, Blood Pact, Mamporal’s Glory, Stalked, Without Amparo, On Ships Rum and Chocolate, Following You and The Special. He is currently developing in Mexico, as Executive Producer, the project of a feature film comedy “The Weather Girl”, which will be directed by Malena Roncayolo. He also produced, wrote and directed numerous series, miniseries and documentaries for TV. His documentaries include corporate, ecological, social and political themes.
For 35 years he has taught filmmaking and in the last 16 years he has been a screenwriting, film analyst and Script Doctor. Co-founder of the Film and TV School -in Caracas, 1983- where for 32 years he was a professor of Screenwriting and film direction. Urgelles has had a leading role in professional associations and governing institutions of Venezuelan cinema and has participated as a lecturer in numerous events dedicated to screenwriting, direction and film production, in Venezuela and abroad.
